@Matt_Noyes I had written a long thread making other points, but in the end I deleted it as it probably wasn't going to aid understanding that much.

I am reconsidering my engagement with Social.coop given recent and not so recent events and in particular the negative reactions to my work from other people.

But regardless of what happens: thank you for what you do and have done for Social.coop and for keeping communication open.

@Matt_Noyes thanks for expressing that Matt! So do you mean that because the TWG got flak for taking time to do things, I shouldn't press the CWG to go faster?

I understand that but the issue here is that I don't feel seen or like my concerns have been taken seriously; did the TWG ever do that to anyone?

I've gotten mostly shallow dismissal and what feels like stonewalling. Not a single person has conceded that I am making at least a reasonable point (e.g. by pointing out that the CWG *shouldn't* suspend people for fuzzy reasons, and *should* seek to update our Code of Conduct to make it reflect how we're moderating, and *should* let the tens of people that their decisions unilaterally affect know when they have taken action -- and ideally publish a moderation transparency report). I am trying to help us uphold the standards I think we should have.

@joel Oh gosh, thank you! 😁 It's been ordered! I got the white one, I know that's a whole thing, people love the black ones, but the contrast feels better to my eyes with the white (that's the color of Kobo I have too).

I made a webpage today where I put my favorite videos I saw today! Oh and I also added you to my blogroll! And now that I'm thinking about it, neither of those are linked to from within the site, I have more editing to do....

Oh and I did heart a bunch of favorite wallpapers on the community site!

@Matt_Noyes the pattern is clear from my PoV (not saying I am fully right here, just voicing it): suspending is easy, unilateral and quick, removing suspensions even when a directly affected party requests it is hard, group-driven and somehow time (and occasionally emotionally) intensive. At least this time I didn't have to set up a vote and do a week of extra work to undo what a mod did after probably max five minutes of consideration, like last time with Threads :) Or did I?

I'll try to take a break and consider what I want to invest my time and effort on. I am averaging multiple hours of work for the coop some weeks, and all this has made me wonder again if it all makes sense, in particular given that people are making it clear they don't appreciate my way of working.

In any case, I do know that the vast majority of people here have good intentions, and I know you do. Thank you for the work you do and have done for the CWG and for Social.coop in general!

@flancian Eduardo, I hear your frustration with our friends on the CWG, but as you well know people on the working groups do their best. The TWG has gotten its share of criticism for the time it has taken to do its work, so it doesn't seem fair to judge the CWG for taking the time it needs.

I'm watching one more YouTube video. ☺️

(Seriously just imagining the ability to have it with my little TN, and take notes on what I'm reading on the go, it's intoxicating)

In other news #SocialCoop mods #suspended an account I want to talk to (and is not a Nazi or clear troll or anything that we have voted is bannable), and asked me to wait more than three weeks before they discuss my appeal and consider moving the account to just limit as I suggested (a corrective action with no downsides as I see it). 44 people out of 1.4k monthly actives are following them and might lose the connection if the suspend is not lifted by end of this month.

IMHO this is not ideal and we should collectively do better. I can't honestly recommend Social.Coop to people anymore until moderation practices improve in response times, transparency and alignment with voted policies.

I plan to update this thread as more comes to pass.

@eloquence I agree with your position on AI limits but I'm proposing Limit instead of Suspend because this is what the moderation team applied to one account in this "space" ~ten days ago. Thank you for voting and posting!

@flancian Thanks for clarifying that. I did initially misread the context, and I appreciate the sentiment behind the proposal. I think as worded it unintentionally _broadens_ the scope to cover areas of speech, opinion and personal use that are beyond what the CoC or our other moderation policies should reasonably cover.

I'd be in favor of a much narrower approach:

- Scraping of follower-only content or DMs for any reason (AI or not) is prohibited

- If and when accounts who have previously engaged such practices credibly stop them, they may be unblocked after a period of 30 days, but repeat violations may result in indefinite suspension.

I'll post that on Loomio as well to be constructive :)

The Microsoft Edge team (and in extension the #PWA team at Google Chrome) is looking for feedback on developer preferences when it comes to Web Install:

- declaratively using the `<install>` element (https://github.com/WICG/install-element)
- imperatively using the `navigator.install()` API (https://github.com/MicrosoftEdge/MSEdgeExplainers/blob/main/WebInstall%2Fexplainer.md)

You can provide your feedback on the GitHub Issue: https://github.com/WICG/install-element/issues/23.

@flancian sounds fine to me. I agree that which model being used and where its hosted are important factors that many people are either blind to, or uninterested in. Its a new and complex thing and folks are still figuring out how to identify and categorize it. My advice it to try not to take it personally and continue to point out the differences so people can navigate it better. Maybe a "guide" or article on ethical ai would be timely.

I’ve often wanted to make an ADHD screening test, written by me and other ADHDers (totally a joke yet also totally real), where you give different scenarios and then options for how things will turn out.

Like, oh, say, this one:

You have an amazing convergence of luck and executive function, and realize that a beloved old friend’s birthday is in three weeks (in case she’s reading this: the friendship is old, not you). In another unusual stroke of luck, you get a card, sign it, even remember to have your husband sign it, find that you have the perfect stamp, and address the envelope.

What happens then? Do you:

A) Put it on your desk, intending to mail it in a few days when it will arrive just in time for her birthday? And then...actually do that?

B) Put it on your desk, intending to mail it in a few days, then forget about it, lose it, find it in six months, mail it, after texting her an awkward yet skillful (thanks to years of practice) apology?

@actuallyadhd #ADHD

@axolotl I agree some interference with unethical endeavours might make sense! I just don't like the blanket dismissals because it means we don't look at it on a per-case basis, nor consider the tradeoffs.

For example: I think it's fine-ish to use models from Mistral (French AI), or use some of the already reasonable local models -- in particular if what we *do* with them is prosocial (e.g. create tools that democratize information access for the people, or enable more people to improve their lives in some quantifiable way). And from there we can argue where we draw the line?
