People are complaining about Amazon's refusal to take care of old Kindles and then saying this is why they only read "real" books.

The problem was never digital books, the problem is the corporate ecosystem, which sucks in a thousand different ways. Complain about that, not the existence of eBooks.

I love "real" books, I literally make real books by hand, but I also love digital books. One can break the DRM and free those beloved weightless little tomes into your own hands, for you to keep forever and ever (provided you back them up of course). I read far more than I could otherwise by using a digital format for about 70% of my reading.

Please stop shitting on eBooks, when Amazon the company is RIGHT THERE.

@hollie Could not agree with you more! I actually love eBooks – as someone with a disability I find them much easier to read one-handed than paper books (where I get a fatigued hand holding them open), and I love that I can buy hundreds of them without having to find storage for all of them in our flat. The problem is and has always been capitalism pressuring companies to institute locked-down systems, DRM, planned obsolescence of reading devices, and so forth

@jayeless Oh gosh I empathize with the fatigue holding them open! And the space. When I got the KOReader app and I was able to set up my shelves just the way I wanted them, that was it, I became Team Ereader forever.

@vnsr I haven't tried that yet, the only Kindle left is the one my husband uses and he wants me to keep my code-breaking mitts off of it. 😂

@hollie Preach. I love a good paper book myself, but being snooty about format makes no sense.

I carried several hundred eBooks with me in my purse on the airplane. I can read in the bed at night without a big booklight shining in my partner's eyes. eReaders are fabulous.

@cherizilla Yeah, for a long time I thought the ereader was a solidly great convenience but that I would only ever _really_ have the true "book experience" that I love, with hard copies of books.

And then years go by and now that's changed! I have been so surprised. I found KOReader and that just massively changed my ereader experience for the better. Then I found a font I liked that was so easy on my eyes, and now I really prefer the Kobo. I read hard copies when I have to, or when it's nonfiction and I know I want to put dozens of notes and markers in.

@hollie

At one point, we had 5,000 paper books.

Now, well.... I cab still read print titles. Not print sizes so much.

I now have a 5,000 epub library.

I do miss some of the ones I had in paperback, and libraries simply don't have.

At least with an epub reader, I can make the font a readable size and type!

@UncoveredMyths Font size and readability is so real! Especially as folks get older and eyesight gets a little wonky from person to person.

I read in both formats too. DRM is why I convert my ebooks to epub after I buy them. I love hard copy books, but save space with e-books when I can.

@hollie I agree, I love having ebooks on my phone. Sometimes when I forget to bring a book to read when I will be sitting in a waiting room, I know I have something to read right there in the palm of my hand.
