@ticky @jaredwhite Yes, and I feel like the thing is that Bluesky separates the idea of “instance” and “data store”. So you can eg store your data yourself in a place where it’s under your control rather than Bluesky’s, but continue to use Bluesky’s services. Mastodon couples the two, which is mostly not a problem except when the server you’re using shuts down and you can’t take that data anywhere.

@ticky @misty What not-Bluesky "instance" can I migrate to?

Not being snarky, I genuinely don't know. The only other one I've heard of which is really separate infrastructure now is Blacksky.

@jaredwhite @misty this is not really a defense of Bluesky’s decentralisation, you can in theory self-host but in practice it’s expensive, complex and difficult. There are at least two third-party public “instances,” Blacksky and Northsky.

“bsky.social” *is in fact comprised multiple nodes* is what I mean by “experiencing decentralisation;” there’s a reason they made migrating a profile losslessly possible, as it aids in their own infrastructure scaling.

@misty @ticky I'm not actually interested in the separation of "instance" and data store. If I want to move off Bluesky because I don't like them, just moving my PDS somewhere else but still using all of the rest of bsky's services means nothing to me. I literally don't see the point at all. 🤷🏻‍♂️
