was federating but I've now disabled it; it turns out that federation needs some fixes and Mayel recommended we turn it off for now. The inconsistent experience when following/interacting from outside bonfire.social.coop has to do with known bugs.

It's also such a vicious cycle - you make lots of parking space, people find it easy to park AND very hard to get from place to place without a car, because everything's so spaced out.
Also - even if things are in walkable distance, there's the assumption that all travel is by car. I stayed in one motel that was super close to a steak restaurant - I was like perfect, I can walk over, get steak and have a couple of glasses of red wine.
Could I heck - I tried. There was no sidewalk. No path.

So the few times I've been to the US - once to California (which admittedly is different, on vacation rather than work), once to Corpus Christi, once to Arkansas (near Memphis) - I found myself boggling at how much open asphalt there was between stores.
I wondered if it was just because they had the space to expand, so they just did. It didn't occur to me that there were minimum parking rules. It was always very easy to park. Everywhere looked sort of empty/unpopular.

For a user on a different server from yourself, you can see different things by looking at their page on their home server's website, compared to what you can see from your own home site or an app. I frequently forget this.

the anarchist in my bloodstream wants to find a way to enact the many small overlapping affinity group model where we can disperse and re-engage fluidly as the situation demands and maybe it's just feeling stuck where the structural model is to grow big and homogenous to be stable

instance scale is just about the furthest thing from a "goal" as i can imagine, and I wonder if this is a byproduct of fediverse-flavor federation where identity is bound up with instance, and if we wouldn't be better served with being part of many, smaller, overlapping groups instead. it's related to what i've been saying in the main chat about how the thing that we really seem to be needing is a collective reflection on values and if we come to irreconcilable differences to split up.

I have been hanging out on the other social networks too and one of the presiding modes of thought there is "i just want a place where i can post" and that doesn't match how i feel at all, but it's also been tough contributing time here because I have been trying to get our own sister instance off the ground with lessons learned from here and also I feel like in the last few big discussions we've had the vibes have gotten rotten and we don't have a good way of reeling that in.
